Understanding Trauma: Based on the Book “The Body Keeps the Score” (1.5HR)

According to Bessel Van Der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps The Score, “while we want to move beyond trauma, the part of our brain that is devoted to ensuring our survival (deep below our rational brain) is not very good at denial… This precipitates unpleasant emotions, physical sensations, and impulsive and aggressive actions.” The goal of this training is to have a better understanding of trauma, toxic stress, and adversity, and be able to have greater compassion for those served. In this training, we will cover the definition of trauma, how the “body keeps the score” (changes in the chemistry of the body), how these changes affect behavior, thinking, and emotion, and the role of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Learn About Revolutions in Understanding the Mind & Brain through Neuroscience
  • Identify What Happens to Our Brain During Trauma: Body-Brain Connections and the Anatomy of Survival
  • Determine Approaches to Working with Trauma Clients
