Cultural competence can imply that clinicians can acquire a defined set of knowledge and skills to become equipped to work with a particular cultural group. Cultural humility, in contrast, emphasizes ongoing self-reflection, openness, and a willingness to examine ones assumptions, biases, and use of power. This course explores the clinical significance of this distinction and its implications for therapeutic engagement, assessment, communication, and repairing relational ruptures. Through case studies and reflective exercises, participants will develop practical strategies for recognizing implicit bias, navigating power differentials, and fostering meaningful engagement across diverse client settings. Clinicians will learn to integrate cultural humility into everyday practice to support therapeutic relationships that respect clients’ cultural identities, perspectives, and lived experiences.
Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate cultural competence from cultural humility and explain the clinical implications of each approach.
- Apply structured self-reflection to identify personal biases and assumptions that may influence therapeutic engagement.
- Analyze clinical case examples to identify power differentials and select strategies to address cultural ruptures and strengthen therapeutic relationships.
