Clinicians are not immune to the emotional impact of the social and political environment in which they live and work. Political conflict, racial injustice, community violence, and constant exposure to distressing information contribute to compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion. Participants will examine how these forms of depletion show up differently in the body and in the work, and why generic self-care advice often falls short of addressing them. This course moves beyond traditional “self-care” recommendations and builds sustainable strategies for maintaining professional effectiveness, boundaries, emotional regulation, and personal well-being. Participants will explore how to recognize early warning signs of depletion before they compromise clinical judgment or client care, and how to build structural, not just emotional, safeguards into their caseload and schedule. Clinicians will examine components of a personalized sustainability plan designed to support professional effectiveness, boundaries, emotional regulation, and well-being during politically turbulent times.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how ongoing social and political stressors can affect clinicians’ emotional well-being and professional functioning.
  • Identify the differences among compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion as they relate to clinical practice.
  • Differentiate between traditional self-care approaches and sustainable strategies that address emotional, professional, and structural sources of clinician depletion.
  • Describe key components of a personalized sustainability plan that supports professional effectiveness, boundaries, emotional regulation, and well-being during politically turbulent times.
