Trauma rarely occurs in isolation; it is often embedded within family systems and transmitted across generations through relational patterns, attachment disruptions, unspoken narratives, and survival strategies. Intergenerational family theories provide a powerful framework for understanding how trauma, loss, and resilience are passed down—and how these patterns can be identified and interrupted in clinical work.

This training explores the application of intergenerational family theories in trauma treatment, drawing from Bowen Family Systems Theory, attachment theory, psychodynamic and relational models, and contemporary trauma-informed approaches. Participants will examine how family roles, boundaries, emotional cutoffs, and multigenerational beliefs shape trauma responses, identity development, and coping strategies across the lifespan.
The course will focus on practical clinical applications, including assessing intergenerational trauma, using genograms and narrative techniques, and integrating family of-origin work into individual and family therapy. Emphasis will be placed on helping clients develop insight, emotional regulation, and choice— supporting differentiation while honoring cultural, historical, and systemic contexts.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Explain key concepts from intergenerational family theories and their relevance to understanding the transmission of trauma across generations.
  • Identify intergenerational trauma patterns using assessment tools such as genograms, family narratives, and attachment-informed interviewing.
  • Apply intergenerational frameworks to trauma treatment, integrating family systems concepts into individual, couple, and family therapy while remaining culturally responsive and trauma- informed.
