Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) involve real and often disruptive symptoms shaped by bidirectional interactions among gastrointestinal physiology, attention, learning, stress, and behavior. This training provides a practical framework for recognizing the symptom-fear cycle and intervening with validation, collaborative formulation, attentional flexibility, behavioral experiments, acceptance-based strategies, and appropriately selected exposure. A substantive case study will follow a client from assessment through formulation and treatment planning, including scope-of-practice and medical coordination considerations.
Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least four cognitive, behavioral, and interoceptive processes that can maintain symptom-related fear in DGBIs.
- Differentiate adaptive symptom management from avoidance and safety behaviors that may reinforce threat learning.
- Construct a collaborative formulation linking GI sensations, predictions, arousal, behavior, and functional consequences.
- Design a graded intervention plan using at least two evidence-informed brain-gut behavioral strategies.
