This training provides an overview of the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, which emphasizes growth and change as key aspects of healthy relationships. It explores stages of couples’ development, differentiation, and attachment dynamics. Participants will learn how to assess and address common challenges in couples therapy using a developmental lens. The training also highlights tools for fostering resilience, mutual understanding, and connection.
Upon completion of this training, learners will be able to:
- Explain the stages of couples’ development and their impact on relationship dynamics.
- Analyze the role of differentiation and attachment in fostering healthy relationships.
- Identify areas of developmental stagnation and design interventions to address them.
- Apply the Developmental Model to support growth, connection, and effective conflict resolution in therapy.
Social workers completing this course receive 2 Clinical asynchronous continuing education credits.
For other board approvals, this course qualifies for 2 hours of Clinical continuing education training.

Recorded Live Webinar with downloadable presentation slides and/or handouts, evaluation, and a required quiz. The learner is required to pass with a 70% or higher to achieve the CE certificate of completion. The learner is able to reset the test until a satisfactory score is achieved.

Objective #1: Understand the Core Principles of the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy
- Define and explain the Developmental Model developed by Ellyn Bader and Peter Pearson.
- Identify the five key stages of couples’ development: Symbiosis, Differentiation, Practicing, Rapprochement, and Synergy.
- Describe the role of differentiation in fostering emotional maturity and relationship resilience.
Objective #2: Assess Developmental Arrests and Their Impact on Relationship Dynamics
- Recognize signs of arrested development such as chronic failed differentiation and hostile-dependent dynamics.
- Conduct assessments that identify where a couple is developmentally stuck and the sources of pain and disappointment.
- Distinguish between healthy regression due to life transitions (e.g., parenthood) and unhealthy dependency or avoidance patterns.
Objective #3: Apply Therapeutic Interventions to Promote Growth and Healing
- Integrate therapeutic approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), The Gottman Method, and Imago Relationship Therapy to support couple development.
- Facilitate clients’ ability to differentiate by helping them manage anxiety, communicate clearly, and remain emotionally present during conflict.
- Guide couples in setting goals around mutual growth, emotional honesty, and developing essential relationship skills.
