Course Description

This training equips therapists with the tools to help clients understand, navigate, and
begin healing from toxic family dynamics. Participants will learn evidence-based
strategies to support clients in setting boundaries, managing guilt and emotional
manipulation, and developing resilience in the face of family conflict. Through
interactive discussions and case studies therapists will gain practical skills to guide
clients toward healthier relationships and emotional well-being. This course also
explores ethical considerations, cultural influences, and the decision-making process
around estrangement when necessary.

Recorded Live Webinar with downloadable presentation slides and/or handouts, evaluation, and a required quiz. The learner is required to pass with a 70% or higher to achieve the CE certificate of completion. The learner is able to reset the test until a satisfactory score is achieved. Meet Your Facilitator

Katie Wangelin, MSW, LCSW has amassed two decades of clinical experience working in the field of grief, loss, chronic illness, and trauma. As a clinical social worker, she works with clients across the lifespan (ages 11-99!) in her private therapy practice in Greensboro, North Carolina. In addition to the provision of individual and family therapy, Ms. Wangelin serves as a consultant to several local non-profits and provides group therapy for individuals living with serious medical conditions including cancer, ALS, and other progressive illnesses. Ms. Wangelin believes in strengthening the corps of up-and-coming mental health professionals. To that end, she also provides clinical supervision for provisionally licensed clinical social workers with an emphasis on supporting those clinicians embedded in medical communities. In addition, to experience as a direct-care clinician, Ms. Wangelin has served in a leadership capacity with organizations including The Women’s Resource Center of Greensboro, The Kids Path Program, and Authoracare Collective.

Overview of frequent errors in diagnostic formulation
Overlapping symptom presentations and diagnostic “look-alikes”
The impact of cognitive bias and premature closure in clinical judgment
Strategies to slow down the diagnostic process and increase accuracy

Objective 2: Applying Structured Tools and Heuristics for Differential Diagnosis

Using DSM-5 and ICD-10 cross-references effectively
Decision-making frameworks and flow charts for common disorders
Incorporating checklists, structured interviews, and screening tools
Real-world case vignettes to strengthen pattern recognition and clinical reasoning

Objective 3: Integrating Cultural, Developmental, and Contextual Considerations

Cultural humility and the influence of worldview on symptom interpretation
Differentiating developmental norms from pathology across the lifespan
Recognizing environmental and systemic factors that shape presentation
