Journaling and expressive writing are powerful therapeutic tools that help clients process emotions, gain insight, and foster resilience. This training will provide you with practical strategies to integrate these techniques into clinical practice, drawing from research in narrative therapy, cognitive-behavioral approaches, and trauma-informed care. Participants will explore different types of journaling exercises, including structured prompts, free writing, and guided reflection, to support clients in enhancing self-awareness, regulating emotions, and reframing distressing experiences.

Through experiential activities, you will learn how to tailor expressive writing interventions to diverse client needs, whether working with anxiety, depression, trauma, or personal growth. Ethical considerations, confidentiality, and ways to navigate resistance will also be addressed. By the end of the training, you will have a toolkit of evidence-based writing techniques to confidently incorporate into your sessions, empowering clients to use writing as a vehicle for healing and transformation.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Define “journaling therapy” and “expressive writing”
  • Describe the clinical benefits of expressive writing
  • Analyze various types of expressive writing
  • Identify the best ways to introduce expressive writing to clients
  • Describe which types of expressive writing are most appropriate depending on the client’s presenting issues
  • Describe common obstacles to client engagement with expressive writing and how to manage them
