Whether your clients are transgender, non-binary, two-spirit, gender fluid or agender, those in these gender-diverse communities need clinicians who understand the issues they are facing, as well as how to best meet their needs. In this training, facilitated by a gender therapist who is part of the gender diverse community herself, you will learn how to feel more comfortable and confident serving your gender diverse clients. We will review gender-affirming terminology and explore a wide range of identities within the gender-diverse community. You will learn how to provide gender affirming care for clients of different ages (ranging from children to teens to adults). This includes what to include on in-take forms and how to create a welcoming office atmosphere. You will also become familiar with themes that typically arise in session, such as coming out to oneself, friends, family and workplace; navigating social and medical transition; and dealing with grief and loss (both on the part of the clients as well as their family members).

We will also discuss how to write referral letters for clients (both adults and minors) who are seeking gender affirming medical care. In doing so, we will examine the DSM criteria for “Gender Dysphoria,” the role of WPATH (the World Professional Association for Transgender Health) guidelines, and how exactly to conduct a gender consultation for letter-writing purposes. This webinar will also explore the potential for client transference and clinician countertransference, as each can impact the therapeutic relationship in profound way.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify a wide range of identities among people who are gender-nonconforming.
  • Describe the micro and macro challenges that impact the mental health of gender-nonconforming individuals.
