In this workshop, we will explore how unspoken family expectations, emotional “debts,” and inherited roles influence clients’ identities, coping patterns, and relationships. Across generations, families transmit narratives about loyalty, duty, sacrifice, and success, often shaping clients’ choices in ways they may not fully recognize. These intergenerational legacies can create resilience and belonging, but they can also produce guilt, pressure, role entrapment, or internal conflict. Through theory, case examples, and practical clinical tools, participants will learn to identify inherited patterns using systemic and narrative approaches. The training also examines how cultural identity, migration history, and family stories shape clients’ perceptions of obligation and belonging. Attendees will practice using genograms and narrative or experiential interventions to help clients surface hidden loyalties, set healthier boundaries, and move toward greater autonomy while still honoring cultural and familial values.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify intergenerational patterns of emotional inheritance, invisible loyalties, and role assignments using systemic and narrative assessment tools
  • Explain how cultural identity, historical experiences, and family narratives influence clients’ perceptions of duty, obligation, and belonging
  • Utilize genograms and at least one experiential or narrative intervention to help clients surface and explore inherited family “debts” or burdens
  • Apply clinical strategies that promote differentiation and healthy boundary-setting while honoring clients’ cultural and familial values.
