Have you ever asked a patient “If you never got caught, what would you do to meet your addiction needs?” This course explores addiction beyond substance use, including behavioral addictions like pornography, video games, food, as well as “dopamine addiction”.  Because criminal thinking and addiction thinking overlap on several traits such as impulsivity, rationalization and emotional dysregulation, it is important to understand their impact on co-occurring disorders. Understanding these similarities helps therapists develop more effective treatment strategies for individuals facing both addiction and criminal behavior challenges.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Gain insight into various forms of addiction beyond substance use, including behavioral addictions such as pornography, gaming, and food addiction, as well as the emerging concept of dopamine addiction.
  • Learn about the significance of co-occurring diagnoses in patients with addiction issues, recognizing how mental health conditions intersect with addictive behaviors and the implications for treatment.
  • Examine the relationship between addiction and criminal thinking, including how mental health issues like bipolar disorder and PTSD may influence legal troubles, enabling therapists to better tailor their therapeutic approaches for clients involved in the criminal justice system.
