This course explores the ethical complexities surrounding the giving and receiving of gifts within therapeutic relationships. Clinicians will examine professional boundaries, ethical guidelines, and potential impacts on the therapeutic alliance when navigating gift-related situations. The training will address how to assess the intent, timing, and meaning of gifts, and offer best practices for decision-making rooted in ethical principles and clinical judgment. Participants will engage in reflective examination of their own cultural values, beliefs, and professional roles, while considering the diverse cultural norms and practices of clients. Through discussion and case analysis, this course fosters ethical awareness and culturally sensitive approaches to managing gift-related dilemmas in therapy.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ethical and therapeutic issues of gift giving and receiving in mental health practice.
  • Explain at least three key ethical and practice considerations around gift giving in practice.
  • Discover and consider variables related to culture, therapeutic relationships, and countertransference as they relate to gifts.

Diane Bigler, LCSW, LSCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Missouri and Kansas with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. She has held clinical positions as an outpatient and in-home therapist, and clinical supervisor. Diane was an Adjunct Professor of Social Work for 10 years at The University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare, and a Field Liaison and Field Instructor. She has also held administrative positions as a Program Director and Coordinator.
