An “ethical termination of therapy” means ending a therapeutic relationship with a client responsibly and professionally only when the client is no longer benefiting from treatment, has achieved their goals, or when continued therapy could potentially harm them while ensuring proper communication and providing necessary referrals if neededAll therapeutic relationships come to an end, but exactly how should that happen? Clinicians should avoid abandoning clients and instead engage in ethical termination. This webinar will distinguish between termination and abandonment from an NASW ethical perspective. Case studies will highlight complexities clinicians should assess in their client termination process. Learners will feel more informed about ethical termination, be prepared to engage in ethical termination practices with clients and avoid unethical abandonment.
Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify and classify ethical responsibilities of therapeutic termination with clients.
- Describe examples of unethical abandonment and distinguish them from ethical termination.
- Discover methods of engaging in ethical termination practices and minimizing unethical abandonment of clients.
