Dealing with court and attorneys is scary, and many clinicians have no training related to divorce and separation, whether in graduate school or postgraduate programs. While clinicians tend to feel more competent in some areas, like notetaking/record-keeping or managing intake and paperwork for individuals experiencing separation or divorce, they often don’t realize what they are missing in their process. Therapists receive the highest number of board reports and are involved in the most litigation when they have divorce clients, especially high conflict divorce. This training is designed to help keep therapists out of bad legal situations with these cases. Want to learn how to keep yourself out of hot water with these cases, deal with attorneys, and feel prepared for going to court? With this training, you can spend less time worrying and more time helping clients.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Determine the ethical and legal implications of working with people going through separation and divorce.
  • Identify and apply role differentiation and conflicts that can arise when working as a therapist with divorcing clients (or their children).
  • Distinguish the roles and responsibilities of therapists in providing documents and testimony.
  • Develop policy and procedures for practice including intake paperwork and how to respond to subpoenas and other requests from clients and attorneys.
