This training examines how artificial intelligence is being used in everyday mental health practice and the ways it may support client engagement, follow-through, and access to care. Participants will explore common types of AI and current applications, including documentation support, conversational tools, peer support, crisis response, and between-session resources. Through practical examples and clinical vignettes, participants will consider how different tools may complement therapeutic work while maintaining the importance of human connection and clinical judgment.

The session will address benefits and limitations of AI use, along with key considerations related to informed consent, privacy, bias, fairness, and appropriate boundaries. Participants will also explore how to evaluate whether an AI-supported tool is a good fit for a particular client, how it may affect engagement and accountability, and when its use may add pressure or introduce clinical or ethical concerns. A guided learning activity will provide an opportunity to examine an AI-supported mental health tool and consider its potential application in practice.

This training is designed for clinicians seeking a realistic, practice-focused introduction to AI in mental health care. The emphasis is not on adopting AI, but on developing the knowledge and clinical judgment needed to make thoughtful decisions about if, when, and how these tools may be used responsibly.

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Define the role of AI in mental health practices.
  • Describe the ethical considerations of using AI in therapy.
  • Demonstrate how to use AI tools to enhance client engagement.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of AI tools in supporting client accountability.
