This training explores the emerging concept of moral injury through a trauma-informed lens, offering clinicians practical tools to support healing, repair, and posttraumatic growth. Originally studied in military contexts, moral injury is now recognized among healthcare providers, therapists, caregivers, social justice advocates, and others in helping roles. Participants will explore how moral injury differs from PTSD or burnout and recognize signs such as shame, guilt, and spiritual distress. Through case examples, reflective dialogue, and embodied strategies for grounding and self-compassion, therapists will gain tools to support clients—and themselves—in navigating value violations with compassion and integrity.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the defining characteristics and clinical presentations of moral injury in mental health and caregiving contexts.
  • Differentiate moral injury from trauma, PTSD, and burnout, and identify overlapping risk factors.
Demonstrate two or more trauma-informed strategies to support repair, self-forgiveness, and posttraumatic growth.
  • Develop an individualized framework to assess and respond to moral injury using clinical, relational, and reflective tools.
