This practical webinar guides clinicians through the process of writing effective, respectful, and ethically sound referral letters to support adolescent and adult clients seeking gender affirming medical care. Grounded in current WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Standards of Care, the training will cover the key elements and structure of letters for hormone therapy, surgeries, and other gender affirming interventions. Participants will learn how to write affirming letters that center client autonomy and dignity while meeting the clinical and documentation requirements of medical providers and insurance companies. Special attention will be given to anti-oppressive language, informed consent models, and supporting clients navigating systemic barriers.
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the clinical and ethical considerations involved in writing referral letters for gender-affirming medical care.
- Explain the role of the current WPATH Standards of Care in guiding documentation for gender-affirming medical interventions.
- Construct referral letters that include the clinical information commonly required by medical providers and insurance carriers while respecting client autonomy and dignity.
- Apply affirming, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive language when documenting recommendations for gender-affirming care.
- Assess referral letters for adherence to ethical principles, informed consent practices, and professional documentation standards.
- Identify strategies for reducing barriers to care through accurate, respectful, and clinically appropriate referral documentation.
