Memory reconsolidation is the “secret sauce” of trauma healing, as it is the integral ingredient in evidence-based treatments for PTSD such as EMDR, Rapid Resolution Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Technique. Memory reconsolidation is a process in which an existing distressing memory is activated, thereby becoming susceptible to change. This temporary malleability allows for new learning to occur related to the original memory. This process overwrites the negative emotional charge of the initial negative experience, which means that the client won’t be triggered anymore when they encounter cues that triggered them in the past. Memory reconsolidation is a way to permanently transform traumatic memories, as well as the beliefs associated with those memories, into something wholly new, which leads to the healing of PTSD.
In this training, you will learn the science behind memory reconsolidation, how it works to address symptoms of PTSD and techniques for utilizing this powerful therapeutic tool in your clinical work.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the science behind memory reconsolidation
- Identify how memory reconsolidation can be used to address traumatic memories
- Describe how to integrate memory reconsolidation into a trauma-informed treatment plan
- Learn at least three ways to induce memory reconsolidation
