Cancer treatment can impact the mental health of patients and family members to such a degree that it is imperative to separate what are “normal” reactions to the abnormal situation and what are more serious mental health concerns. Throughout the training, participants will increase knowledge regarding the impact of depression and anxiety in cancer patients, develop a confidence in discussing sensitive topics, as well as understanding steps to ensuring their own mental well-being when dealing with an often terminal situation.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify risk factors and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety in cancer patients.
- Describe challenges for diagnosing and treating depression and/or anxiety in cancer patients.
- Distinguish common periods of crisis during the cancer experience and develop ways to effectively communicate.
- Express measures that help prevent compassion fatigue to remain healthy to continue providing services to patients and families.
