The course examines the impact of social media on Black Americans and the phenomenon of vicarious trauma. We will explore how widespread sharing of images and videos depicting violence or the loss within the Black community can lead to psychological and emotional distress. Topics will include social media exposure, defining various trauma and strategies for building resilience and mitigating the impacts of vicarious trauma. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique challenges Black Americans face in the digital age and develop approaches for promoting mental health and well-being within this context.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Identify the emotional and mental impact exposure to racial violence and injustice through social media platforms
Develop strategies and interventions to mitigate the effects of vicarious trauma within the Black community in the digital age.

Meet Your Facilitator

Dr. Ashley D. Gilmore is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and National Board Certified Counselor. She has obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Purdue University, Masters of Science degrees from Indiana University and Capella University. She also holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision from Hampton University. Ashley is the Owner of Gilmore Counseling & Consulting Services, PLLC and works with individuals, couples and organizations to obtain healthy mental and emotional wellness. Ashley has presented in multiple settings including the National Board of Certified Counselors Annual Symposium, Purdue University, Indiana University, The University of Pittsburg, Monument of Faith Church, Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church and more recently, Hampton University. She has been featured on ABC11, Voyager Magazine and Helpful Living Magazine. She hails from East Chicago Indiana and is married to her high school sweetheart, Dr. Jeremy Gilmore, has two daughters (Jocelyn and Jaelle), and her dog, Jinx. Ashley is a Spiritual woman, who believes you can have Jesus and a therapist.
