Elderly Addiction: Identification of and Interventions for Substance Misuse and Use Disorder in Older Adults (3HR) Presented by Dr. Paul Hardy, D. Min, CSAC, NMAC

This training examines substance misuse and use disorders among older adults, focusing on their unique challenges and vulnerabilities. It explores the biopsychosocial factors that contribute to substance use in this population and the impact of aging on substance metabolism and overall health. Participants will learn to identify symptoms, address stigma, and apply evidence-based interventions to support recovery. The course also highlights strategies for prevention and collaborative care in working with older adults.

Upon completion of this training, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the distinctions between use, misuse, and substance use disorders in older adults.
  • Identify biopsychosocial factors that contribute to substance misuse in the aging population.
  • Recognize the impact of age-related changes on substance metabolism and health outcomes.
  • Apply evidence-based approaches, such as CBT and motivational interviewing, to address substance use.

Social workers completing this course receive 3 General/Substance-Specific asynchronous continuing education credits.

For other board approvals, this course qualifies for 3 hours of General Skill Building with a focus on Substance-Specific continuing education training.
