Navigating Ethics for Telehealth and AI prepares mental health professionals to address the evolving ethical challenges of delivering care in a virtual environment. As telehealth platforms and AI tools increasingly shape clinical practice, therapists must thoughtfully balance innovation with professional responsibility.
This course examines core ethical principles—including confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries, equity, bias, data security, crisis management, and accountability—within the lens virtual and AI-supported care. Participants will explore the ethical implications of AI-assisted documentation, clinical decision support tools, chatbots, and algorithmic bias, while ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards. Through movie clips, case examples and practical strategies, clinicians will reflect and discuss ethical considerations together to develop a framework for ethical decision-making that promotes client safety, trust, and high-quality care in technology-enhanced practice.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Ashley is a natural leader, published researcher, and compassionate clinician with over five years’ experience in the social work field, specializing in mental health and substance use. MSW graduate and currently pursuing licensure for clinical social work and clinical addiction specialist. She graduated from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, obtaining a B.S. in Counseling and a minor in Expressive Arts Therapy. In her time there, she was involved in a research study on social fear and learning and published in the Journal of Education and Training Studies in April of 2014. After working in the substance abuse field at the inpatient, residential, and outpatient level, she focused her efforts on mental health and connecting people with quality services as a community liaison for two years. She currently works as a residential therapist at UNC Horizons, working with pregnant women and mothers in early substance use recovery.
Introduction
This course explores the ethical integration of telehealth and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical practice. Participants will examine the benefits, risks, and ethical responsibilities associated with emerging technologies while learning strategies for maintaining safe, effective, and compliant care.
Objective 1: Understand Foundations of Telehealth and AI in Practice
Participants will review the scope of telehealth services and the growing role of AI in clinical settings. The course will explore the benefits and limitations of these technologies and their impact on mental health care delivery.
Objective 2: Examine Ethical Principles and Professional Standards
This section focuses on core ethical considerations related to telehealth and AI, including confidentiality, privacy, informed consent, and professional boundaries. Participants will explore how ethical standards apply within technology-supported care.
Objective 3: Identify Risks and Challenges in Technology-Based Care
Participants will examine concerns related to data security, technological limitations, and potential bias within AI systems. The course will also address clinical responsibility and ethical accountability when integrating technology into practice.
Objective 4: Apply Ethical Decision-Making in Clinical Practice
Participants will learn frameworks for ethical decision-making and best practices for maintaining compliance and client safety. Emphasis will be placed on responsible, thoughtful use of telehealth and AI tools in clinical settings.
