This training equips professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to assess, diagnose, and treat adolescents struggling with substance use disorders. Participants will explore a broad range of substances commonly misused by teens, understand the bio-psycho-social factors contributing to adolescent addiction, and gain familiarity with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and evidence-based screening tools. The course also examines therapeutic interventions such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Contingency Management, DBT, and family-based models like MST and MDFT. Special attention is given to barriers in treatment, confidentiality concerns, and the vital role of family engagement in the recovery process. Participants will leave with practical tools and insight to provide developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care to adolescents and their families.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Assess and diagnose teens with Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
- Analyze specific therapeutic approaches & evidence-based practices implemented for treating teens with SUDs
- Criticize unique challenges for families & develop interventions in working with families
- Conclude specific treatment considerations for teen substance use
This course qualifies for 1.5 CE hours of Substance Specific, General Skill Building, and Evidence-Based Practices training.
