This training equips professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to assess, diagnose, and treat adolescents struggling with substance use disorders. Participants will explore a broad range of substances commonly misused by teens, understand the bio-psycho-social factors contributing to adolescent addiction, and gain familiarity with DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and evidence-based screening tools. The course also examines therapeutic interventions such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Contingency Management, DBT, and family-based models like MST and MDFT. Special attention is given to barriers in treatment, confidentiality concerns, and the vital role of family engagement in the recovery process. Participants will leave with practical tools and insight to provide developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care to adolescents and their families.
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the diagnostic criteria and patterns of teen substance use, including common substances and comorbidities.
- Examine evidence-based therapeutic modalities for treating adolescents with substance use disorders.
- Recognize barriers to treatment for teens and their families, including confidentiality, accessibility, and stigma.
- Apply effective assessment and screening tools tailored for adolescent substance use and co-occurring disorders.
- Explore family-based interventions and strategies for engaging caregivers in adolescent recovery processes.
