Course Description

Clinical Supervision Best Practices is a two-hour training designed to strengthen supervisory competence across counseling, social work, psychology, and allied mental health fields. Blending theory with practical skill-building, this session equips supervisors to cultivate strong supervisory alliances, deliver effective feedback, navigate ethical decision-making, and promote supervisee growth. Participants will engage in case-based scenarios, reflective exercises, and peer dialogue. Grounded in developmental and reflective supervision models, this webinar emphasizes cultural humility, ethical clarity, and practical tools that can be used immediately in daily supervisory practice. All helping professions working in a supervision capacity are welcomed to attend.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Meet Your Facilitator

Ericka Cables, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, is a licensed professional counselor and wellness consultant. She tailors her approach to address the unique wellness needs and cultural nuances of each individual and organization.

Through her clinical supervision, she uses supervision models that use relational, multicultural, and trauma-informed lenses with theoretical grounding in Person-Centered and Relational Cultural Therapies. She is trained in EMDR, TF-CBT, and has participated in several Train-the-Trainer learning sessions to bolster her professional growth. In conjunction with being a clinical supervisor and wellness consultant, she teaches master-level counselor interns.

Syllabus

Introduction: Effective clinical supervision is not merely a procedural requirement—it is an essential mechanism for protecting client welfare, nurturing professional growth, and sustaining the long-term health of practitioners. Supervisors today must balance multiple responsibilities: supporting supervisees’ development, monitoring clinical quality, managing risk, addressing cultural variables, and navigating increasingly complex client presentations.

Objective 1: Strengthen supervisory foundations through effective models, structure, and relationship-building.

Explore developmental, relational, competency-based, and culturally responsive approaches to clinical supervision and how to integrate them based on supervisee needs.
Discuss strategies for tailoring supervision to developmental level, clinical competencies, learning needs, practice context, and cultural factors.
Examine the supervisory alliance, including goals, tasks, and bond, and how psychological safety, trust, transparency, and accountability support effective supervision.

Objective 2: Enhance supervisory communication through structured, behavior-focused feedback.

Identify strategies for providing specific, observable, strengths-based feedback that promotes reflection, skill development, and actionable change.
Apply structured feedback approaches, including Situation–Behavior–Impact (SBI), Ask–Tell–Ask, and feedforward, to guide supervisee development.
Develop strategies for addressing difficult conversations, competency concerns, and cultural considerations while maintaining respect, accountability, and psychological safety.

Objective 3: Navigate ethical, legal, risk-management, and cultural considerations to support safe, competent practice.

Examine supervisors’ responsibilities related to client welfare, confidentiality, informed consent, documentation, boundaries, competence, impairment, gatekeeping, and ethical practice.
Discuss proactive risk-management and crisis procedures, including responding to safety concerns, clinical deterioration, boundary violations, complaints, and other supervisory challenges.
Explore strategies for addressing persistent competency concerns, resistance, dependency, overconfidence, under-confidence, and remediation while balancing support, development, evaluation, and accountability.
