Course Description

This is an experiential training for exploring the power of ritual as a transformative tool in clinical practice. This training will examine how intentional, symbolic actions can help clients navigate transitions, release emotional burdens, and reinforce personal growth. You will learn how to co-create personalized rituals tailored to clients’ cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and therapeutic goals, integrating elements such as storytelling, movement, objects, and mindfulness. Through hands-on exercises, case discussions, and ethical considerations, you will leave with practical strategies for incorporating therapeutic rituals to deepen meaning, enhance healing, and support lasting change.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Identify the components of ritual-creation
Identify the clinical benefits of using ritual in session
Apply ritual creation to various clinical issues

Social workers completing this course receive 3 Clinical asynchronous continuing education credits.

For other board approvals, this course qualifies for 3 hours of Clinical continuing education training.

Meet Your Facilitator

Dreya Blume, LCSW, has traveled a long and winding road to arrive where she is today,as a therapist, coach, author, and group facilitator.

She has taught English in Thailand, Japan, Australia, and Hawaii. She has worked in psychiatric wards, served as a case manager, and eventually launched her own private therapy practice.

She has taught part-time as an adjunct professor for over twenty years, led multi-day international retreats, and written seventeen books, with an eighteenth on the way.

Syllabus

Introduction

This course explores the therapeutic use of rituals as tools for transformation, grounding, and meaning-making. Participants will learn how to create and facilitate intentional rituals that promote emotional regulation, integration, and empowerment for clients experiencing transition, stress, or loss.

Objective 1: Identify the Components of Ritual Creation

Define the core elements involved in designing therapeutic rituals.
Explain the role of symbolic action in healing and personal change.
Differentiate between routine, habit, and intentional ritual within a clinical context.
Explore common types of rituals and their relevance in psychotherapy.

Objective 2: Describe the Clinical Benefits of Rituals in Therapy

Examine how rituals act as nervous system regulators, promoting safety, grounding, and embodiment.
Discuss how rituals serve as narrative interventions that help clients reframe and reauthor experiences.
Identify opportunities to integrate ritual-based approaches across different theoretical orientations.

Objective 3: Apply Ritual Creation to Clinical Practice

Design personalized rituals to address common clinical challenges, including:
Anxiety and stress reduction: grounding and centering practices.
Grief and loss: remembrance and release rituals.
Empowerment issues: strengthening agency and self-trust.
Practice adapting rituals to meet client needs across diverse cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

Objective 4: Reflect and Integrate

Summarize key concepts and techniques learned.
Engage in Q&A and collaborative discussion.
Reflect on how ritual practices can support both clinician and client growth.
