Course Description

Participants will learn advanced theories and techniques related to systemic intervention, cultural competency, and trauma-informed care. Participants will enhance their ability to conduct thorough assessments, tailor treatment plans, and adapt therapeutic modalities to optimize family functioning. Additionally, attendees will develop proficiency in trauma-informed practices to support families grappling with intergenerational and individual trauma.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Meet Your Facilitator

Dannie Doskocil is a Licensed North Carolina Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, a Licensed K-12 School Counselor, and a Board Certified Telemental Health Provider with over two decades of experience. After obtaining her Master of Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Florida in 2001, she earned a second master’s in Clinical Social Work from the University of Central Florida in 2005, with specializations in addictions and social policy.

Dannie was a pioneer in the field of telemental health, establishing her virtual private practice in 2016 where she specializes in treating preteens, teens, and emerging adults. When the world shut down in 2020, she played a critical role in training school counselors and social workers in one of the largest U.S. districts and authored their inaugural policy manual for virtual services. Her expertise has been showcased at national platforms like the 2017 National Conference on Addiction Disorders. As a “trainer of trainers,” she has been influential in shaping discussions around clinical assessments, trauma, and telehealth.

Dannie is an author and mother of a very sassy Hufflepuff with special needs. With a trauma-informed approach, Dannie remains committed to making mental health services accessible to everyone.

Syllabus

Introduction

This course builds advanced clinical skills in family therapy, focusing on systemic interventions, cultural responsiveness, and trauma-informed practice. Participants will explore multiple family therapy models and learn how to apply them effectively within diverse and complex family systems.

Objective 1: Apply Advanced Systemic Intervention Techniques

Participants will explore key family therapy models, including Emotionally Focused, Structural, Strategic, and Narrative approaches. For each model, the course will review theoretical foundations, core techniques, and relevant cultural considerations to support effective intervention in complex family dynamics.

Objective 2: Extend Cultural Competency in Family Therapy

This section focuses on applying cultural competence in clinical work with families. Participants will examine how cultural identities, values, and systemic influences shape family dynamics and inform treatment approaches.

Objective 3: Integrate Trauma-Informed Practices in Family Work

Participants will develop skills for working with families impacted by individual and intergenerational trauma. The course will review trauma-informed care principles, identify populations and diagnoses that may require modified approaches, and explore key ethical considerations in family-based treatment.
