Exploring Effective Trauma Treatment Strategies (3HR)

Course Description

The treatment of trauma continues to be a central focus in psychotherapy. This workshop is designed to explore specific resilience-based trauma therapy interventions for clients who have experienced trauma. The eight guides to trauma treatment will be presented along with core trauma competencies for clinicians. Cultural considerations in advanced trauma treatment will be discussed, and learners will have the opportunity to use critical thinking skills by examining case studies that encourage application of advanced trauma treatment techniques. Modalities such as CBT, DBT, ACT, somatic experiencing, and Seeking Safety will be outlined.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

Identify eight guides to effective and evidenced-based trauma treatment.
Describe core clinician competencies of advanced trauma treatment.
Explain at least three resilience-based advanced trauma treatment strategies.

Social workers completing this course receive 3 Clinical asynchronous continuing education credits.

For other board approvals, this course qualifies for 3 hours of Clinical continuing education training.

Meet Your Facilitator

Diane Bigler, LCSW, LSCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Missouri and Kansas with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. She has held clinical positions as an outpatient and in-home therapist, and clinical supervisor. Diane was an Adjunct Professor of Social Work for 10 years at The University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare, and a Field Liaison and Field Instructor. She has also held administrative positions as a Program Director and Coordinator.

Diane is a popular local and national trainer on a wide variety of mental health and workplace development topics for clinicians and corporations. Diane is most passionate about providing quality professional development to clinicians, employees, and leaders. For fun, Diane loves to spoil her four Dachshunds and rock out to 80’s music.

Syllabus

Introduction

This course explores evidence-based approaches to trauma treatment, focusing on clinical competency, resilience, and ethical care. Participants will examine core trauma principles, effective intervention strategies, and methods for supporting long-term recovery.

Objective 1: Identify Core Principles of Trauma Treatment

Participants will review trauma-informed care principles, key trauma-focused competencies, and Dr. Bruce Perry’s six core strengths. Emphasis is placed on understanding how trauma impacts development and functioning across the lifespan.

Objective 2: Understand Clinician Competencies in Advanced Trauma Work

This section examines therapeutic targets for trauma recovery, trauma across the lifespan, and culturally responsive care. Participants will explore how clinician awareness, safety, and attunement support effective trauma treatment.

Objective 3: Apply Resilience-Based Trauma Interventions

Participants will learn practical strategies including trauma stewardship, self-care principles, stabilization techniques, values-based work, and clinical tools such as DBT strategies, ACT metaphors, self-compassion practices, and pattern recognition. Case examples will be used to support application.

The course concludes with a summary and discussion of key concepts, along with resources to support continued learning and clinical application.
