The number of people who died from a drug overdose in 2021 was over six times the number in 1999. Drug overdose deaths increased more than 16% from 2020 to 2021. Over 75% of the nearly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid.

There is a great need for:

  • timelier tracking of nonfatal and fatal drug overdoses,
  • implementing health systems interventions,
  • partnering with public safety, and
  • implementing other innovative surveillance and prevention activities.

In this webinar, we will investigate the history of opioid use as we clarify the key factors of substance use to evaluate current approaches and seek updated possibilities.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Classify the key factors of Substance Use Disorder
  • Identify opioid pharmacology
  • Consider risks and behavioral patterns
  • Evaluate the current effectiveness and limitations of treatment approaches
  • Examine ethical considerations and dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals
