MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. In this webinar, participants will learn the basics of implementing Motivational Interviewing – Engaging Clients in Behavior Change. We will learn about the four elements of Motivational Interviewing “spirit”: Acceptance, Collaboration, Evocation, and Compassion as well as the “four processes” of MI. Participants will learn about the role of open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries in MI and will view a demonstration. “Change talk” and “sustain talk” and will have the opportunity to practice these important skills through case study examples. The “elicit-provide-elicit” model for information exchange will be demonstrated and ways to include this exchange in the treatment of substance use disorders will be discussed.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

Explain the four elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI) “spirit”

Define Miller and Rollnick’s “four processes” of MI.

Demonstrate “OARS” skills.

Identify the Core Concepts of “change talk”, “sustain talk”, “rolling with resistance”

Implement the skills learned through case study practice.

Lorna Vanden Heuvel is the Owner & Training Development Officer of CE Training Workshops, LLC. She is a Licsensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist, and a Clinical Supervisor Intern. She obtained her BA in Human Development from Eckerd College in St. Pete, Florida and her Masters in Social Work from Widener University in Pennsylvania with a specialization in Trauma. One of her many passions is getting together a group of professionals and leading a discussion on the topic of the day. The backbone philosophy of her company’s approach to providing education is that there is just as much learning to be gained from each other as there is from the expert facilitator. As such, CE Training Workshops events are highly participatory and interactive – both in-person and in our live webinars!

Lorna is trained in learning methodologies and instructing techniques as well as course material development to meet any professional training needs. Lorna has 20+ years of combined training & development and social services experience in the corporate sector, substance use recovery programs, and mental health and has had the pleasure of working with large brand organizations as well as the homeless population. In her spare time, Lorna and her husband serve at their church and enjoy a competitive game of pickleball.
