Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness strategies in order to help individuals better understand and manage their thoughts and emotions in order to achieve relief from feelings of distress. Though originally developed to address recurrent depression, MBCT may be beneficial to people seeking treatment for a wide range of mental health concerns. In this training, we will explore the goals of MBCT, compare and contrast with other popular psychotherapies, and review and implement practical strategies that can be implemented with any patient.

Meet Your Facilitator

Portia Purcell is a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, National Board-Certified Counselor, and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist. She earned her Masters degree in Community Counseling with a certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling in 2011 from UNC Charlotte‘s CACREP program.

As a dedicated and compassionate therapist, Portia has provided counseling to clients ranging from adolescents to elder adults with a wide variety of clinical symptoms and concerns. Her primary focus for the last few years has been treating patients with high suicidality, self-harm behaviors, family functioning issues, as well as depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Utilizing her eclectic clinical approach, she has effectively treated high risk, and often deemed “ difficult to treat ” clientele using CBT, DBT, and other interventions within the individual, group, family, and crisis response settings.

It is Portia’s hope to continuously learn and grow as a clinician and to help others create and live a life worth living.
