HIV AIDS

HIV/AIDS & Other Bloodborne Pathogens

This course will provide the information needed to protect yourself and your consumers. Helping professionals are vulnerable to blood borne pathogens, viruses, and infections. Your work as a provider may expose you to diseases and infectious substances. Topics of discussion will include working with clients who have been diagnosed with HIV, AIDS, or other Bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis; educating your consumers about safety measures to prevent exposure to their partners and family; and ethical concerns as it relates to confidentiality/duty to warn, etc.

Ethics

Ethics & Technology in Clinical Practice

In this workshop we will review the recent changes made to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics to address the increasing challenges presented to the professional in their use of technology while meeting the needs of their consumers. The proliferation of the use of digital and other electronic technology to deliver services, store and access information, and communicate with consumers, colleagues, and others has created new ethical challenges, particularly related to informed consent; privacy and confidentiality; boundaries, dual relationships, and conflicts of interest; practitioner competence; records and documentation; and relationships with professional colleagues. We will also discuss the flip side of the coin – what new issues are we seeing in our consumers as a result of the overwhelming use of social media?

The Opioid Crisis: Past, Present, Future

An estimated 1.9 million people in the United States have a prescription opioid use disorder. Another 586,000 have a heroin use disorder. Health care providers wrote nearly a quarter of a billion opioid prescriptions in 2016—enough for every American adult to have his or her own bottle of pills. This course will discuss causational addiction factors (biomedical causes and the neuroscience of opiate addiction), statistics of the opioid crisis, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Opioid Initiative which focuses on three priority areas to tackle the opioid crisis, and the mental health implications for the professionals who work with this population.

CBT: Theory & Techniques

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a short-term form of behavioral treatment. It helps people problem-solve. CBT also reveals the relationship between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and the behaviors that follow. Through CBT, people learn that their perceptions directly influence how they respond to specific situations. In other words, a person’s thought process informs their behaviors and actions.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is not a distinct treatment technique. Instead, it is a general term which refers to a group of therapies. These therapies have certain similarities in therapeutic methodology.  Participants will have the opportunity to role play a few  techniques such as Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Alternative Action & Longitudinal Formulation, Functional Analysis, and Dysfunctional Thought Record and will be provided with handouts to use with their clients.
